Road safety assessment Westerval

DOK carried out a road safety scan for the Westerval in Enschede, as part of RISM-II. The road generally scores well on road safety, partly thanks to wide lanes, a physical central reservation and a 10-metre obstacle-free zone. However, issues were identified on three of the 8.2 kilometres of road section length. These are partly due to an increased accident pattern and partly due to design features that deviate from CROW guidelines. For example, the exit towards Josink Esweg proved unclear and risky, and there are accidents at the merge with Parkweg. Also, a merging lane does not fully meet the minimum length requirement. Although no structurally excessive speeds were measured, the results provide grounds for targeted measures for this important access road in Enschede.
