Our road safety research for Ringbaan West was carried out on the basis of the accident ratio per street, taking into account both traffic exposure and future traffic intensities. Our analysis not only looks at the number of expected accidents, but also at the function of roads within the network, the shape and design of the street and the actual use by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. We worked according to the step-by-step plan below.

On Ringbaan West itself, the 2x2 variant leads to an increase in the number of accidents, on top of an already worrying road safety situation. Although the effects on surrounding roads are neutral, the situation on Ringbaan West makes this variant undesirable.

The 2x1 variants (short and long) offer a solution and show an improvement (reduction in accidents) compared to the 2040 reference and the 2x2 variant. Within the 2x1 variants, the short variant clearly performs better than the long variant. The long variant causes more streets with a relevant negative effect, both in the area within the Ringbaan and in Tilburg West.

This makes the 2x1-short variant the best option and therefore the preferred variant that contributes most to reducing the number of accidents on Ringbaan West and the surrounding streets from a road safety perspective. Road safety on Ringbaan West improves, while on surrounding streets only seven streets show a relevant increase in accidents compared to six streets with a decrease, so that the effects largely compensate each other. Moreover, only one relevant attention location remains as a bottleneck for compensatory measures: the Postelse Hoeflaan.

For comparison: with the 2x1-long variant, the number of accidents increases on sixteen surrounding streets, while six streets show an improvement. In addition, three relevant attention locations remain as bottlenecks where compensatory measures are desirable: the Conservatoriumlaan, Postelse Hoeflaan and Academielaan.
